The Role of a Police and Crime Commissioner.

Sue Mountstevens, the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, attracted a packed hall for the Clevedon Probus Club (1974) when she spoke about her work on 1st March.

Members and their guests were impressed by her frankness and willingness to answer questions on a wide range of subjects, including the controversial appointment and dismissal of Chief Constables.

She described her role as a bridge between the police force and the community that it serves. One measure of this was that 1400 people had contacted her compared with only 250 under the previous system that had been dominated by local authority members.

The need to cope with Government imposed budget cuts of £60m over the last 3 years (with a further £17m still to find) had inevitably resulted in a loss of officers, but it was clear that real progress was being made in responding to the needs of the community and deterring people from reoffending.
